Artificial Intelligence and its Impact on our Society
Recently, AI (artificial intelligence) has been the topic of many conversations around the world. Different forms of it are also present in our everyday lives. Amazon and Google use AI to try to figure out what you might want to buy next, or which website you want to find. Siri is a form of AI that Apple uses to assist their customers.
AI is now being introduced in the workplace and there is heavy debate whether or not this is a good idea. It is predicted that almost 40% of jobs will be replaced with AI in the next 15 years. These jobs include both white and blue collar professions. The industry that will be affected the most are drivers. Currently there is a lot of fear mongering in the public about this potential great loss.
A similar event happened in human history with the industrial revolution. With the invention of steam powered machines, people thought most of the worlds jobs were going to be taken over by machine. What happened was the basic level jobs were taken by machine, but other jobs were created at the same time. People had to learn how to use the machines, fix them, and it also allowed for people to be able to spend time doing more valuable jobs than something a simple machine could do.
AI could have a similar story. With its introduction into the workplace, jobs may be taken, but others will also be created. The people whose jobs are replaced by AI can become more valuable by doing more advanced things. Instead of fearing a crash of the economy with the introduction of AI, it may stimulate the economy to new heights.

It is interesting how AI is growing so quickly today, and how it is potentially becoming dangerous to many professions. Many big names in the tech field such as Elon Musk are actually afraid of the possibilities that AI provides. Musk says "AI is far more dangerous than nukes", which initially seems like a massive exaggeration, but I think that if we look closely at the abilities of AI today, his statement seems a lot more reasonable. It is very important now to consider if we need to put a limit on AI so that when we are adults we still have human jobs rather than losing everything to AI.

I think it also interesting to look at the ethics behind AI. For example, one question to ask is if it really is possible to make AI that is unbiased based on what parameters it is able to take in. This is really important to look at because it means that it is relatively unsafe to have certain jobs completely rely on AI, and as a result still requires actual humans to review results. It is also important to look at the ethics of removing all these jobs for the sake of efficiency, such as trying to figure out whether the money lost in wages is made up for in reducing the prices of products and creating new jobs for those original people. Ultimately, these are some of the important questions that we must routinely ask ourselves as technology is further integrated into society.
