Black Market of Organs

Everyone has accidents. But some are worse than others. Those who are in need of organs have an unfortunately expensive and case that they must deal with in order to survive, and many people struggle to afford it.

But why are organs so expensive? They are both very rare and very inelastic, meaning many people want them but there are very few suppliers. The suppliers, therefore, can raise prices significantly in order to make the most profits, which put organ receivers at a large disadvantage.

The U.S. government has chosen to make this industry illegal because they don't want to mess with the regulation of this market. If organ purchasing was legal and done in the private sector, prices would skyrocket and would call for government intervention, which is another whole industry that they have to regulate.

Instead, keeping the U.S. out of these illegal trades is beneficial to the prices of the organs and the efficiency of the government, however it calls for more illegal trading and crime.

Which stance do you think the U.S. should take and why?

  1. Nice post Jamsheed, the debate surrounding the legality of the organ market has many arguing for both sides. However, it is interesting to note that in 2016, legally donated organs met less than 10% of global need, which may explain why the organ black market can be very lucrative financially. It is estimated that 10% of transplanted organs come from the black market, with lungs, kidneys, and livers being the highest in demand.
