The Emergence of DAZN

DAZN, a monthly subscription streaming service in which streams over 100 fights, is considered to be the 'Netflix' for sports.

DAZN was founded in 2016 when only in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and later Canada when the company only broadcasted NFL and Soccer. DAZN was launched in the U.S. in 2018. Its main focus shifted towards Boxing as they would agree with Matchroom Boxing, Viacom, and Bellator MMA to have streaming rights for those fights. DAZN also have made notable individual signings with fighters including Canelo Alvarez in which DAZN signed him for 5 years and a whopping $365 million dollars.

DAZN has invested in their company and took advantage of a weak Boxing market. Boxing pay-per-view matches weren't working as effectively and with the streaming rights for individual fighters, it's a no brainers for boxing fans to subscribe to DAZN. Also, DAZN believes it can compete with other streaming services like Amazon as they are able to stream sports that are unattainable in other countries such as NFL in Germany, cricket in Canada, and baseball in Japan.

Stephen Nuttall, Commercial and Strategy Advisor on Sports and a former senior executive at YouTube and BSkyB, says: “Of all the independent OTT providers, DAZN seems to have the boldest ambitions, pursuing premium rights in the markets that they enter and, having initially focused on territories where competition was weak. This high risk can generate high returns.”

In conclusion, DAZN is operated in a fragmented market and has spent a lot of money to obtain streaming rights. They are currently expanding into other sports and into other countries. With the right moves, could we ever see DAZN in the top of the list for streaming services?

  1. I'm an avid sports fan, so when DAZN, a company I had never heard of, gave Canelo Alvarez a $365 million dollar contract I was intrigued. It seems liek DAZN does most of its work outside of the states, sponsoring international atheletes. Based off of their rights, it seems like have ammassed a huge amount of coverage in countries such as, Austria, Germany, and Japan. DAZN have done a wonderful job of tapping into teh international market. Historically, providers have had troubled aquiring all the tv rights for soccer. In the US soccer coverage is split between Fox, Bleacher Report, ESPN, and NBC. In some European countries DAZN have a monoploy over it. This shows me their ambition and I'm interested to see where they end up in a few years.
